HI HOPES Initiative

Marissa Ing & Delia Ulima – EPIC ʻOhana

Self-advocacy is a critical skill that young people in foster care need to learn in order to successfully transition into adulthood. Stakeholders of the child welfare system are developing a grievance process that youth can use when they feel that their rights in care are not being honored in response to the new “Bill of Rights” law. Promotion of self-advocacy ensures that youth have the skills necessary to self-lead and speak for themselves. The HI HOPES Initiative will create short videos to educate foster youth and their adult-supporters about the importance of self-advocacy. These videos will be viewed statewide.
