The New Immigrants?

Sergio Alcubilla – Legal Aid Society of Hawai'i

Highlighting the needs and contributions of Hawaii’s newest immigrant group, from countries part of the Compact of Free Association (COFA) including the Federated States of Micronesia, the Marshall Islands, and Palau. Under COFA, the U.S. was allowed to continue military testing and even nuclear bombing in the islands and in return citizens would be granted passage to come and work in the U.S. Yet, they are treated scornfully, looked upon as scapegoats and free-loaders. Through this project, people will understand that their new neighbors are not to be blamed for problems plaguing the state and will better understand Micronesians' history and contributions.
