Raising Bertie

Raising Bertie follows three young men over the course of five years as they grow into adulthood in Bertie County, a small African American-led farming community in North Carolina. Through the intimate portrayal of these young men, we see the issues facing America’s rural youth and the complex relationships between family, economics and education.

Shot over the course of five years, Raising Bertie tells the story of three young men coming-of- age in the rural farming community of Bertie County, North Carolina. Their stories offer a rare longitudinal look that brings attention to the educational barriers confronting rural American youth and humanizes issues of poverty, race and juvenile justice in these communities. By highlighting the stories of these young men and their community’s struggle for economic development, Raising Bertie sheds light on the challenges rural schools face in educating some of the nation’s most vulnerable youth.
